CUPE Says City Not Interested In Bargaining

The union representing over 750 city workers is taking a hard stance when it comes to contract negotiations as the strike deadline looms.

Members of CUPE 101 are in a legal strike position as of May 23 at 12:01am.

A no-board report was issued after both sides met eight times. Mediated talks will happen on May 21 and 22.

"We are hopeful that with a provincial mediator at our next meeting, the employer will come back to bargaining with a different attitude and work with is to reach a fair collective agreement," says Local 101 President Shelley Navarroli. "Our members are in the business of serving the public and we are keen to achieve a fair contract so we can continue to do just that, providing public services to our residents."

Navarroli goes on to say that the contract revision the city brought to the table last meeting was the same as those turned down before. The main sticking points continue to be wages and benefits.

Workers have been without a contract since December 31 of 2014.

CUPE 101 represents people who work in water and waste water administration, finance, traffic management, tourism, bylaw enforcement, and technical services.
