Londoners Donate To Sponsor Syrian Refugees

A fund dedicated to helping Syrian refugee families settle in London has already collected $41,000.

When photos showing three-year-old refugee Alan Kurdi dead on a Turkish beach surfaced online many across the world issued a call to action to help those trying to flee war-torn Syria.

Since September 8, the Libro Credit Union has collected the money and expects the fund will grow.

Mayor Matt Brown reached out to the Big City Mayors' Caucus and discussed how to coordinate efforts countrywide.

“Londoners have demonstrated that we are a compassionate and caring community and I would like to thank everyone for their in-kind and financial contributions. This is an impressive amount raised over a short period of time,” said Mayor Matt Brown. “I am so pleased with the way our city responded and I encourage Londoners to continue to support the cause.”

Meanwhile, Premier Kathleen Wynne is urging the federal government to streamline the process to allow more refugees into Canada.

Groups participating the London effort include the Metropolitan United Church, The Islamic Centre of Southwestern Ontario, The London Muslim Mosque, St. Andre Memorial Anglican Church, Byron United Church and St. Aidan's Anglican Church of London.

You can drop off donations at Libro branches or contact the above organizations for more information.
