SIU Clears Huron OPP In Drowning

Huron OPP police have been cleared of any wrongdoing in the drowning death of a woman in Lake Huron last month.

The Special Investigations Unit says it found no action or inaction on the part of officers contributed to the death of the 32-year-old woman south of Bayfield.

Police were called to the beach in Bluewater on November 1 after family members searching for the woman spotted her in the water about 35m from shore. When police arrived, the woman was heard yelling. An officer and family member locked arm-in-arm and ventured into the waters to rescue the woman but the waves were too strong and they were unable to find her.

Firefighters later recovered the woman's body from the lake.

The province's police watchdog ruled the officer waded into the lake in a well-intentioned but unsuccessful attempt to rescue the woman.
