More than two years after the tragic event that took his life, an inquest will be held into the death of a London man who died at a construction site in Waterloo.
Nick Lalonde was 23-years-old when he fell from an apartment building on King St. N in Waterloo on October 11, 2013. He was performing masonry work for Maison Canada. Investigators with the Ministry of Labour say the young father of one was hit by a crane carrying a skid of concrete blocks, knocking him from the roof top. Lalonde fell four storeys before landing on scaffolding. He had been on the job less than a week.
Central Construction, the company subcontracted by Maison Canada, plead guilty to failing as an employer to ensure that a fall restricting system was used where a guardrail system was not reasonably possible. A fine of $90,000 and a 25% victim surcharge was leveled against the company.
The inquest, which is mandatory under the Coroners Act, will examine the events surrounding Lalonde's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The inquest is expected to last three days and to hear from approximately 10 witnesses.
It will begin at 9:30am on Wednesday, January 27 at the Waterloo Superior Court of Justice.
