A garbage fire in south London is creating headaches for local firefighters trying to douse it.
The blaze at the City of London Landfill on Manning Dr., near White Oak Rd. was spotted shortly after 6am on Thursday.
With no hydrants on the property fire crews have been forced to truck water in from a water fill up station.
Firefighters have contained the fire in the dump but it continues to burn.
"Apparently it is sort of getting underground a little bit, which makes it very difficult to extinguish," says Platoon Chief Lewis Carter. "Currently, I'm sending a trailer out there with some foam on it to try to expedite the situation."
Thick smoke from the blaze has drifted across much of the south end of the city, creating a few visibility issues for motorists.
Carter says the fire is not considered suspicious.
"Sometimes dumps start on fire because of the heat caused by the stuff that's laying out there. It's similar to fires in hay barns," says Carter.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
