Firefighters battle blaze at the old McCormick plant

Smoke filled the air in east London after a wooden structure on the roof of the old McCormick plant went up in flames.

Firefighters were called to the now vacant factory on Dundas Street between McCormick Boulevard and Ashland Avenue Tuesday afternoon around 3 p.m.

"There was a lot of smoke when crews were arriving on scene, but it was due to the nature of the wooden structure that was on the roof," said Acting Deputy Fire Chief Jack Burt.

Fire crews had to set up an aerial ladder to gain access to the roof before they could extinguish the fire.

"We are going to take some time to make sure the fire is completely out, make sure there is no extension into the structure before we vacate," said Burt, who anticipated firefighters would remain on scene for several hours.

No one was hurt in the blaze.

"We are investigating the origin cause and circumstances of the fire," said Burt. "We are still very early in the investigation."
