Police looking for carjacking suspect

The hunt is on for a hatchet-wielding man who is alleged to have repeatedly punched another man in the face during a carjacking in downtown London.

A vehicle, heading northbound on Waterloo Street, was stopped for a red light at King Street around 6:50 p.m. on Monday, when an unknown man jumped into the passenger's seat. The stranger then pulled a hatchet and demanded the male driver take the vehicle around the corner, London police said.

While stopped at the corner of York and Colborne streets, the driver tried to wrestle the hatchet away from the unknown man and was punched several times in the face. He suffered minor injuries in the scuffle.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle, which then sped away. It was last seen heading south on Colborne Street.

Police searched the area, but were unable to find the suspect or the vehicle.

They are looking for a man described as Caucasian, approximately 5’10”, 140 lbs, between 25-35-years-old, with a full black beard, and bald or shaved head. He was wearing a blue and orange ball cap (possibly Detroit Tigers), a grey hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and running shoes. The male suspect was last seen driving a red 2007 Pontiac Solstice convertible, with Ontario licence plate BTZP671.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
