No criminal intent in peeping drone incident

Police will not be laying charges after a Port Dover woman spotted a drone outside of her window while she was changing.

The Ontario Provincial Police said on January 13 between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., the female resident was in the bedroom of her Prospect Street home and began changing clothes when she spotted a drone hovering outside her window with what was believed to be a video camera attached to the bottom.

The homeowner went to the window and saw a man standing near the edge of her property holding a remote control for the drone. She yelled at the man, who then walked away.

Police were contacted about the incident on January 24 and were able to locate the owner of the drone on January 30. After speaking with the man, police said it was "determined that there was no criminal element or intent."

"This was, in fact, a new drone operator learning to fly when they simply lost control of their machine," police said in a news release.

Police officials said drone operators should familiarize themselves with the Trespass to Property Act and the drone requirements under Transport Canada regulations to ensure they are flying the machines safely and legally.
