Students reminded to check up on unoccupied dwellings

London police are urging students who may have left their housing unoccupied before the holidays to report any suspicious activity.

During the stay-at-home order, post-secondary institutions have been permitted to stay open. While Fanshawe College continues to operate blended classes, Western University announced it would delay in-person classes until the end of February with the exception of a few programs.

Police say houses and apartments left unattended for an extended period of time are more susceptible to break-ins and theft.

Students who may be attending their post-secondary programs online from outside of the city are urged to take precautions to prevent these types of crimes.

Those away from their residence during the lockdown measure are advised to check-in with the address periodically, either through a friend or neighbour to avoid unnecessary travelling. It may also be a good idea to let the owner or landlord know of any long-term absences from the property.
