Man in his 80s latest COVID-19 death in London-area

The Middlesex London Health Unit has recorded another COVID-19 death as the number of active cases of the virus in the London area climbed back above 90 on Saturday, as 16 new cases were reported.

Public health officials announced the death of a man in his 80s on Saturday. The man was not associated with a long-term care or retirement home. No other details about him, including his vaccination status, were released.

The  COVID-19 death toll in the London area is at 247.

The London Health Sciences Centre says it is caring for nine COVID-19 patients. Five or fewer are in intensive care. The hospital uses the “five or fewer” figure when the number of patients get low enough that giving an exact number might compromise patient privacy. None of the patients in intensive care are in Children’s Hospital.

As of Friday in Elgin and Oxford counties, 58 new cases were reported by Southwestern Public Health. However, that report covers two days, as the health unit did not report its latest numbers on Thursday because it was closed to mark Remembrance Day.

The Thames Valley District school board has reported COVID-19 cases at six London-area schools.

Ontario reported 661 new cases Saturday. The seven-day average of new cases is now at 559.

Six deaths were reported, bringing Ontario’s COVID-19 death toll to 9,927.
