Another record day for new COVID-19 cases

For the second straight day, the London area has seen a record number of new cases of COVID-19.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 263 new cases on Thursday, smashing the previous record of 228 which was set the day before. London and Middlesex County have now seen a total of 16,743 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.

Fortunately, no deaths were reported on Thursday. The local death toll remains at 257.

The number of cases considered resolved grew by 78 on Thursday to a total of 15,168. Currently, there are 1,318 active cases. Two weeks ago, that figure was 311.

The London Health Sciences Centre says it is caring for 15 patients with COVID-19, and increase of two from Wednesday. Of those, six are in the intensive care unit.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported 89 new cases on Thursday. In total, the two counties have 397 active cases.

Thursday also marked a record setting day at the provincial level. Ontario reported 5,790 new cases and seven deaths. The new case figure is the highest of the pandemic in Ontario. It's also double what was reported last Thursday and nearly a thousand more cases than the previous single day record that was set on April 16.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said Thursday that there are 440 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario. Of those, 304 are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status and 136 are fully vaccinated. She added there are 169 people in intensive care, 137 of whom are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status.
