London City Hall to be lit up yellow and blue in solidarity with Ukraine

The City of London is sending support to Ukraine.

As Russia continues its attack on the country, City Hall will be lit up blue and yellow tonight - the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

"Our city has a long history and a proud tradition of providing aid and accommodation for those fleeing war and other crises," said Deputy Mayor Josh Morgan on Thursday. "London does stand ready to play a leading role in assisting our Ukrainian friends and neighbours if called upon."

"London's Ukrainian community has always provided immense support and comfort in times of great sorrow and need. It is our turn now to do the same for them," said London Mayor Ed Holder in a tweet. "We pray for peace, and we pray for the people of Ukraine."

The Ukrainian flag will also be flown on the flagpole outside of 300 Dufferin Avenue.

Images on social media show cruise missiles flying over Kharkiv and Lutsk, with smoke rising from the strikes. The sound of bombing in the distance can also be heard on videos circulating online, while Russian forces have captured the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl.

Meantime, video from Ukrainian border guards shows troop carriers entering Ukraine from Russian-held Crimea.

City Hall, and other City of London facilities with the capability, will be lit up yellow and blue through at least the weekend.
