A Norfolk County woman is facing animal cruelty charges after nearly 40 animals were removed from a property near Waterford.
Norfolk OPP were called by a driver concerned about animals in the ditch along County Road 19 East in Townsend around 11 a.m. on Sunday. The driver stopped after spotting the animals and tried to locate the owner before contacting police.
Officers found 27 dogs, five cats, one pig and one guinea pig inside the home. All were removed by the Ministry of the Solicitor General Public Safety Animal Welfare Services. Three horses and two donkeys were also removed from the property.
Police did not release any details about the condition of the animals seized.
A 63-year-old Norfolk County woman is charged with cruelty to animals causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury. She is scheduled to appear in Simcoe court at a later date.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
