Pilot project gives pedestrians more time to cross the street

Pedestrians are being given more time to cross one of the downtown's busiest intersections.

An advance walk signal has been installed at Dundas and Wellington streets as part of a new pilot project that aims to improve pedestrian safety.

The new signal, known as a leading pedestrian interval, gives those wanting to cross the intersection an extra five seconds to do so. The light indicating it is safe to walk comes on before vehicles are given the green light, which gives pedestrians a head start and enhances their visibility.

According to the City of London, the new signal improves safety by reinforcing pedestrians' right-of-way over drivers who are turning and by providing people with disabilities more time to cross.

More advance walk signals are expected to be installed in the city, although officials did not specify exact locations.
