Speeding, failing to stop, and driving without insurance were just some of the violations observed by police during the Four Counties Traffic Initiative hosted by London police last week.
The traffic blitz was carried out by the members of London Police Service's Traffic Management Unit, with help from neighbouring police agencies including the Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service, Woodstock Police Service, Stratford Police Service and the OPP.
Police conducted the initiative with a focus on aggressive driving, speeding, loud mufflers, distracted driving (cell phone use), and other equipment related infractions.
As a result, over 100 charges were laid including:
• 61 for speeding. • Seven for red light and stop sign violations. • Seven for operating a motor vehicle without insurance. • Five for driving while under suspension. • Three for failing to wear a seatbelt. • Eight offence notices related to commercial motor vehicles. • 51 other provincial offence notices related to a variety of Highway Traffic Act violations.
Police say another two were also charged with impaired operation of a vehicle, operating a conveyance with blood alcohol level equal to or more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
"Ignoring traffic signs and lights, travelling at excessive speeds and distracted driving are putting members of the public at risk each and every day," said Sgt. Ozzie Nethersole. "We continue to ask Londoners to focus on what they are doing behind the wheel, to help make our city the safest that it can be."
