With a nickname like "the Forest City," it's important that trees across London are properly cared for.
That is why the city is urging residents with a green thumb to give some extra water to trees on or near their property.
"While you have the hose out to water the garden, it’s a good idea to give the tree near your home an extra drink of water,” says Paul Yeoman, Director of Parks and Forestry. “When Londoners help water trees during dry weather, it helps ensure trees stay healthy and strong. We appreciate everyone’s contributions with caring for the trees that make up London’s urban forest.”
With record-breaking high temperatures in London over the last week, city staff are busy watering trees in parks and streets across London. Local residents are asked to supply at least an inch of water per week to trees on their property during this hot, dry spell.
The recommended technique is to apply water slowly around the base of the tree trunk, which allows for better draining over time and more saturated soil.
Mulching around trees can also help the ground retain water for longer periods of time.
Watering when the sun isn't too harsh - early in the morning or in the evening - helps reduce evaporation, allowing more water to be absorbed by plants and trees.
Newly-planted trees - those planted within the last five years - are especially vulnerable to heat. The City of London says young trees benefit from being watered two or three times a week during the summer months.
