Increase in overdoses linked to purple fentanyl prompts warning

Health officials in Oxford County have issued a public safety alert after it received several reports of suspected overdoses linked to a particularly potent type of opioid in the last week.

Southwestern Public Health (SWPH), the health unit that oversees municipalities in Elgin and Oxford counties, said Tuesday that it has been made aware of two deaths and several other non-fatal poisonings that it believes are related to a “very toxic” purple fentanyl that is currently circulating parts of Oxford County.

As a result, the health unit has issued a public health advisory to the community. SWPH is advising community members and organizations to monitor the situation closely and report any new observations to the health unit. Health officials added that some healthcare organizations may see a demand for their services increase.

The public is urged to call 911 if they observe someone who they believe might have overdosed and give them a dose of naloxone if it’s available. They are also asked to stay with the person until medical assistance arrives.

Those who use opioids are advised to not take substances alone, avoid mixing substances, and carry a naloxone kit.
