St. Thomas police have arrested two people accused of assaulting an employee at a church downtown earlier this week.
The incident happened on Monday morning when officers responded to a report of an altercation at a church on Talbot Street.
Officers learned two people were loitering on the property and were asked to move along by the victim. The pair reportedly refused to leave and became combative with the church worker. The victim was allegedly spat on, lunged at, threatened, and punched by the two, causing them to fall to the ground as the incident escalated.
An employee at a nearby business witnessed the scuffle and came to intervene when the two accused took off, police said. The victim was able to snap photos of the suspects which were then provided to police so they could be identified.
The two accused were arrested at around 6:20 p.m. in the area of First Avenue and Elm Street after police received a separate complaint about a person walking around wielding a large knife in the parking lot of the plaza.
As a result, a 20-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were arrested and charged with one count of assault.
The man faces additional charges of uttering threats of death or causing bodily harm and one count of failing to comply with a probation order.
Both have since made court appearances. The woman has been released with a future court date, while the man was remanded back into police custody.
