Patients suffering a stroke or seizure will be able to receive better care closer to home thanks to the addition of a neurologist at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH).
Hospital officials announced on Monday that Dr. Teye Umanah has joined the facility and will be overseeing clinical leadership of the secondary stroke prevention clinic. She will also be holding weekly office hours in the internal medicine department providing assessment and care for a range of neurological conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
"This is big news for our hospital and our community, and is a testament to our commitment to continue to attract top level talent at STEGH,” said Hospital Chief of Staff Dr. Waleed Chehadi. “Dr. Umanah brings a wealth of expertise in the field of neurology, and I am confident that her presence will significantly enhance our ability to provide exceptional neurological care to our patients.”
Umanah earned her medical degree at the University of Calabar in Nigeria before completing neurology training at JFK University Medical Center in New Jersey. She also received subspecialist training in stroke and cerebrovascular diseases at Western University.

Outpatient referrals to see Dr. Umanah are not currently being accepted, according to hospital officials.
