MLHU warns of possible infection due to IPAC lapse

Patients who received procedures from Dr. George Rice between 2019 and September 2023 are being warned of the possibility of a possible blood-borne infection.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is notifying patients about possible exposure during that time following the report of practices that led to an Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) lapse.

The Health Unit assured that at this time, no cases of blood-borne infections have been directly linked to Dr. Rice's practices and that chances of infection are low. But anyone who received a procedure including injections, lumbar punctures, or bone marrow biopsies, is being advised to consult their healthcare provider to discuss testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, and syphilis as a precaution.

An IPAC Lapse Disclosure Report for Dr. Rice's clinic was completed on November 24, 2023. MLHU began its investigation soon after.

The Health Unit said that the practices that led to the IPAC lapse are being corrected.

Anyone looking for more information can contact the Infectious Disease Control Team at 519-663-5317 or by email at IDC@mlhu.on.ca.
