Manslaughter charge laid in downtown fight that killed 21-year-old

A downtown fight that claimed the life of a 21-year-old London man has now led to a charge of manslaughter.

Malik Edwards, 21, died in hospital on Tuesday, five days after he got into a physical fight with another man in the area of Richmond and John streets. London police determined the two men did not know each other when they began fighting around 1:20 a.m. on March 28.

Edwards ended up with critical injuries that saw him rushed to hospital. He died from his injuries on Tuesday.

Julius Moses Timme Enongene, 47, of London, is charged with one count of manslaughter in relation to Edwards' death, police announced on Friday. Enongene has been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 16.

The major crime section continues to investigate.

Tributes for Edwards have flooded social media and a candlelight vigil in his honour was held in Victoria Park.

"He touched the lives of so many with his kindness, humour, and unwavering love," wrote the organizer of a GoFundMe campaign launched to help the 21-year-old's family cover funeral costs. "Every donation, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful difference in ensuring that Malik receives the farewell he deserves. Your kindness and support during this difficult time are deeply appreciated, and we are forever grateful for your love and compassion."

Nearly $22,000 had been raised through the online fundraiser as of late Friday morning.

Edwards death is London's first homicide of 2024.
