London officer cleared of criminal wrongdoing following SIU probe

A London police officer was found to be at fault, but not criminally responsible, for injuries suffered by a cyclist last December.

According to the SIU, on December 7, 2023, a London Police Service (LPS) officer struck a cyclist while making a left-hand turn from William Street onto York Street.

GPS data from the police cruiser showed that the vehicle had accelerated to just under 40 kilometres per hour when the collision occurred.

A 54-year-old man was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured nose and left orbital bone.

Joseph Martino the Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said that the officer's conduct during the incident was "a marked departure from a reasonable standard of care," but the isolated incident fell short of being a criminal act.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
