Velodrome open house aims to get more Londoners into cycling

The Forest City Velodrome is opening its doors with a goal of inspiring Londoners to get off the couch and onto a bike.

The south London volunteer run facility at 2809 Roxburgh Road is hosting a spring bike event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. The four-hour event will showcase cycling clubs, youth programs, and a variety of other ways people can get involved in the sport. More than 15 vendors, retailers, and clubs will have displays and products set up on the infield of the Velodrome’s 138-metre wooden track.

“Spring is the time when many of us dust off our bikes, pump up the tires, and get back to riding. We want people to start thinking about cycling as a four-season sport and making the Velodrome a regular part of their routine,” said Velodrome President Eric Hueston. “Our goal is for the Velodrome to not only become a gathering place for those who love to ride, but also a place where those who want to meet new friends and become a bigger part of the cycling community can come together.”

Those who attend Sunday's event will also be given the chance to try riding the single-gear, no brakes, direct-drive bikes used at the facility.

The Forest City Velodrome opened in the former London Gardens in 2005. It is one of only six indoor wooden cycling tracks in North America. In addition to races, the velodrome offers learn-to-ride programs for people of all ages and experience levels.
