Provincial police in Norfolk County are looking for the person who made more than 1,000 hang-up calls to 911 in a single night.
The first call came in around 12:15 a.m. on Monday from a location on James Street in Delhi. OPP officers responded to the 911 hang-up, but after doing a thorough patrol of the area were unable to locate the caller. The officer also failed to find an emergency situation.
Between 12:15 a.m. and 9:05 a.m., approximately 1,150 similar hang-up calls were made to 911, police said. No emergencies were reported or seen in connection with the calls.
Police are now reminding the public that making false or misleading 911 calls could result in public mischief charges being laid.
"These calls divert valuable resources and time away from genuine emergencies, potentially endangering lives," police said in a statement issued Tuesday. "The resources expended on responding to false calls could instead be utilized to assist individuals facing real emergencies."
The investigation into the 911 hang-ups is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
