SIU probing Aylmer police involvement in serious motorcycle crash

The serious injury of a motorcyclist who allegedly failed to stop for Aylmer police is being probed by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

A police officer on patrol spotted a motorcycle allegedly being driven in an erratic manner on Talbot Street West in the town around 7:30 p.m. on Monday. The bike was passing other vehicles along the stretch of road, police said.

When the officer tried to pull the motorcycle over, it did not stop and reportedly sped away. The officer did not give chase.

The motorcycle was last seen travelling at a high rate of speed on Elm Street before crashing at the end of the dead-end street. Police searched the area and found the suspected motorcyclist a short distance away.

The motorcyclist was taken to St. Thomas hospital with serious injuries.

A 48-year-old Aylmer man has been charged with dangerous driving, failure to stop for police, and failure to comply with demand.

Due to the motorcyclist's injury, the SIU was notified and invoked its mandate. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
