Saugeen Shores Council to Consider Future of Centennial Pool

The future of aquatics in Saugeen Shores continues to be a hot topic around the council table.

A notice of motion was tabled by Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau, which seeks to direct staff to recommend a process that will allow council to reach a decision on the fate of the Port Elgin Centennial Pool by August of this year.

Charbonneau says it's important that council determine the fate of the 40-year old indoor pool, given the pool requires nearly $1.5-million in critical repairs and council has yet to determine if the pool will be staying open for the long term.

With 2015 budget talks set to resume this morning, Charbonneau says he will not be supporting a staff request to spend $900,000 this year to replace the dehumidification system at the Centennial Pool.

Charbonneau's motion will be placed on the January 26th council agenda for consideration.

"Are we going to replace this system and then get rid of the pool next year?   It's not a good way, in my view, to manage the operation [of the pool].   We need to know what the future of aquatics is going to be, and then we can decide how and if we going to invest in the Centennial Pool," says Charbonneau.
