Hanover's Budget Sits At 3% Tax Increase

Hanover Council is aiming for a 3 per cent tax increase heading into budget deliberations next month.

At their meeting on Monday, council asked staff to cut $60,000 from their levy, which would bring the tax rate for residents down to 3 per cent.

In their report, staff said that - without cuts - the current tax rate would sit at 4.09 per cent, or an increase of $30 per $100,000 worth of home value.

"It's a barebones budget," Newly-elected mayor Sue Paterson told CKNX News after Monday's meeting. "With the reduced provincial funding, and downloading of services, the town tax rate is bound to go up."

A 3 per cent increase would be slightly higher than last year's 2.4 per cent tax hike.

Staff will make changes to the budget bring it back to Hanover council on February 2nd.
