Avon Maitland Graduation Rates Keeps Pace With Province

The Avon Maitland District School Board is keeping pace with the provincial average of graduating 84% of students after five years of secondary school. The number for the Avon Maitland Board is 83%.

But Superintendent Mike Ash says the board feels they still have more work to do to increase the number of graduating students after five years.

He says another statistic they look at is the number of students who leave after five years and then come back to complete their diploma. Ash explains students up to the age of 21 can return to high school and about 50 students in each of the last three years have done that. The graduation rate and continuing education rate combined from that group is 87%.

"Some come back to upgrade marks, some come back because they have changed their plans and need to grab another course or two, while some come back to continue their training," Ash tells CKNX News.

Ash says the board believes that's a better indicator of the success of their system and their efforts to help their students achieve their goals.
