Bluewater Council Looks to Eliminate Bottled Water

A spokesperson for the Bayfield Blue Community group has asked Bluewater council to get rid of the bottles of water that sit in front of each of the councillors at their meetings.

A spokesperson for the Bayfield Blue Community group has asked Bluewater council to get rid of the bottles of water that sit in front of each of the councillors at their meetings.

Ray Letheran pointed out that the village of Bayfield is now essentially free of bottled water and suggested in his presentation to council that councillors should be setting an example as well.

Letheran explains that bottle water is considerably more expensive than municipal water but also is only tested for bacteria, while municipal water must pass as many as 140 tests.

He adds there is now more plastic in the Great Lakes than there is in the ocean and points out the two most important industries in Bluewater are agriculture and tourism, and both depend on safe water.

Councillor Bill Whetstone stepped up to say he would provide each councillor with a glass container with the Bayfield Blue Community logo on it so no longer need to use plastic bottles.
