Council Buys Time for Port Elgin Centennial Pool

Saugeen Shores council has bought some time for the Port Elgin Centennial Pool.

Council voted to purchase a used dehumidification system from the Town of Caledon to replace the current system, which is original to the 40-year old pool and is well beyond its life expectancy.

The budget of $212,000 for the project includes purchase of the unit, as well as necessary upgrades to the pool facility, which will be paid through capital reserve funds.

Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau says it's much better solution for council, who voted during budget talks to remove a $900,000 expenditure to have a brand new unit installed at the pool.

Charbonneau says it buys some time for council to determine if the pool will be renovated or if a new facility will be built.

"It's a good reasonable, stop gap. It gives us a chance to catch our breath and to decide what the future of aquatics is going to look like without having the Centennial Pool shut down on us in the meantime, so it's a great step," says Charbonneau.

Charbonneau says council remains committed to its self-imposed August 1st deadline for determining the fate of the pool, adding he hopes the decision will be made earlier than that.
