Grey County Black History Supporter Passes Away

A Grey County man instrumental in bringing the area's black heritage to the forefront has passed away.

Les MacKinnon worked with the the Grey County Black History event since its inception in 2001 and helped get the Pioneer Black Cemetery near Priceville recognized.

He was honoured for his efforts by the Owen Sound Emancipation festival and the Grey County Historical Society.

Les MacKinnon was also worked as an environmental health officer and was a member of Drinking Water Source Protection Committee.

He died at the age of 65.

The Durham area's Greta Kennedy worked with Les MacKinnon on the projects.

"I just can't say enough about how hard he worked to recognize what these people had done to help to build the country," she says. "He worked very hard to bring all the benefits.... of having those folks with us, and the early pioneer type of work that they did be recognized."

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
