No New Information on Hidden Cameras in West Grey

The Durham area's Michael Schmidt got no help or answers from West Grey council over cameras he found hidden on the concession near his home.

Schmidt led a delegation of his neighbours to West Grey council. They want to know who put the cameras there and why.

Schmidt and his neighbours worry because the cameras could be taking pictures of children on their way to a nearby school. "Kindergarten children going up and down the road and there are cameras I think it's mandatory that council give us answers in regard to that issue," said Schmidt in an interview after the delegation.

West Grey Police chief Rene Berger has said police know who owns the cameras and they're not there for criminal purposes.   Otherwise he's not saying anything.

West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles and councillors stand behind the chief.

David Surgarman lives nearby. "Who are they protecting, they're not protecting the children and they're not protecting the citizens of West Grey. You can't film in public like that without notifying people," said Surgarman.

Schmidt has filed a complaint with the Ontario Independent Police Review Director and plans to pursue a Freedom of Information request.
