The Huron County Health Unit is advising people who see a white caterpillar to leave it alone.
Public Health Inspector Patrick Landry explains the white caterpillar is a Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar and its white colour is not its only unique characteristic.
Landry says the caterpillar has spines or needles along its back that can prick the skin of anyone who picks it up and it can insert a small amount of poison through those needles.
Landry points out the poison is not likely to cause serious problems but in some people can result in a rash similar to Poison Ivy.
Landry suggests anyone being stung by the Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar should wash the area as soon as possible and the rash will likely disappear within a day.
He adds not everyone will be effected by the sting and suggests something like Calamine lotion might relieve some of the irritation.
Landry adds the Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillars are particularly common at this time of year.
