Remembrance Day More Relevant Than Ever

The past president of Branch 109 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Goderich says events of the past year have made most people more conscious of the meaning of Remembrance Day and the sacrifices members of the Armed Forces have made over the years.

Paul Thorne points to the tragic shooting of Corporal Nathan Cirillo in Ottawa last year as a focal point that captured the attention of most Canadians.

Thorne adds today's Remembrance Day ceremonies are particularly significant because over the past year Huron County has lost at least 16 World War Two and Korean veterans.

But he also points out they're adding more veterans from Afghanistan and various United Nations missions.

"In Flanders Fields,"John McCrae's iconic lament of war, sacrifice and obligation, is carved in the marble masonry of the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill.

With the 100th anniversary of its creation, tens of thousands of school children are expected to recite the poem across the country today as part of an event prompted by the Vimy Foundation.
