Perth-Huron United Way Awards Grants

The Perth-Huron United Way has awarded three Youth In Action Grants for 2015-16.

The grants are to help young leaders in addressing issues important to them and their communities.

The first grant is for the Open Mind Project out of St. Michael's CSS in Stratford. Their grant is to obtain mental health resources for the students and the Perth-Huron community at large. The student council hopes to help end the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

The GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces, from Goderich District Collegiate Institute, also received a grant. Their aim to is to create a safe environment at school for all students, with campaigns like "Don't Be Scared To Be Yourself." This is designed to help students develop a sense of belonging within the school community.

Finally, the Green Ribbon Campaign from Central Huron Secondary School also received the final grant. They are affiliated with a similar group at South Huron District High School, and both groups want to raise awareness and advocate for children's mental health initiatives in their schools. The grant will help produce graphic material to notify students of safe places to disclose their struggles with mental health.

“Again this year I’m inspired by the enthusiasm of our youth and their progressive approaches to dealing with social challenges," says Ryan Erb, the executive director of United Way Perth-Huron. "We are thrilled to support each of these initiatives."
