Red Scarves Promote World Aids Day in Exeter

Members of the Huron County Health Unit and the Regional HIV/AIDS Connection were busy tying red scarves around lamp and sign posts on the Main Street of Exeter today. Public Health Nurse Shirley Spencer explains December 1st is International Aids Awareness Day and red scarves are larger symbol of the Red Ribbon Campaign Exeter was chosen as the site for this year and people are encouraged people to take a scarf home and carry on the discussion about aids in our area. Spencer adds people have become a little complacent about aids since the 1980's and she suggests part of that could be that the treatment is so much better people with aids live longer and healthier lives. But she adds aids is still very much a problem and people still need to be aware of the risks. Spinrite Yarns donated all of the red yarn for the volunteers to knit the scarves and the volunteers were able to knit about 45 scarves this year and Spencer says they've already started knitting for next year.
