Fewer People Working In Midwestern Ontario

The jobless rate in midwestern Ontario dropped slightly, mostly due to fewer people participating in the labour force.

The Four County Labour Market Planning Board says the unemployment rate in the region stretching from Stratford, up the Bruce Peninsula dropped 0.2% to 5.9%.

The region saw employment fall from 134,600 workers in October, to 133,500 workers in November.

There were about 600 new part time workers, but 1,700 full time jobs were lost.

The manufacturing sector lost 1,500 jobs in the past month, while 1,400 jobs were lost in Education, health, social assistance, accommodation and food.

Construction employers added 1,400 workers.

The board says the planned expansion of Hayashi Canada Inc. in Stratford and a new Foodland in Wiarton will likely mean new construction jobs. The construction of the new Marine Emergency Duties and Training and Research Centre at Georgian College in Owen Sound will also create employment.

The participation rate fell from 58.3% to 57.7%.
