Votto Named Tip O'Neill Recipient

The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame announced Joey Votto as the recipient of this year's Tip O'Neill Award.

The Etobicoke native plays first base for the Cincinnati Reds.

In a release, Votto is quoted as saying:  "It is very humbling to be recognized again by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame when there are so many deserving players."

It's the fifth time in six years Votto has been recognized.

The Hall of Fame says considers a candidate's on-the-field-performance, contributions to his team, community and charitable endeavors in determining who wins the award.

Votto's has donated money fore the construction of a 33,000 square foot training centre at the P&G Cincinnati MLB Urban Youth Academy. He's also been a generous donor to UC Health in Cincinnati with a focus on patients living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The other candidates that made the top three as voted for by fans were Toronto Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin and national women's team star Nicole Luchanski.

Votto will be presented with the award in a pre-game ceremony in Cincinnati early in the 2016 season.
