Saugeen Shores Delays New Motion of Support for D.G.R.

Saugeen Shores council is going to wait, before it decides to reconfirm its support for Ontario Power Generation's proposed deep geologic repository.

Council deferred a motion of support for the DGR project, opting to wait until OPG responds to information requested by federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna, whose job it is to decide the fate of the project.

Councillor John Rich says he's supportive of the DGR, based on the information that has been presented so far, but says it makes sense to see what new information is provided to the minister.

"I think at the end of the day, we owe it to our children, we owe it to everyone in our community to make sure that we have all available information," says Rich.

A handful of representatives from the anti-DGR group Save our Saugeen Shores were on hand to urge council to defeat the motion of support, but spokesperson Charles Hazell says the deferral is encouraging.

"I think it's impressive to see the winds of change blow through this council chamber and see some intelligent discussion about a complex issue," says Hazell.

OPG is proposing to permanently store about 200,00 cubic metres of low-and-intermediate level nuclear waste nearly 700-metres beneath the Bruce Power site.
