Safety Is Key As Students Start Summer Vacations

It's officially here; the last day of school for most elementary students across the region and the country.

Many youngsters and families will be out on their bicycles enjoying their summer holidays so police are asking motorists to be extra vigilant with their surroundings.

"We need to basically drive with care around them because they're going to be out near parks, they're going to be near sports facilities, they're going to be out near trails, tons of places where kids want to be," says Perth County OPP Constable Kees Wijnands.

Police are also asking everyone, both kids and adults, to follow the rules of the road whether in a motor vehicle or on a bicycle.

"Watch for children running out onto the street from between parked cars; we see a lot of near misses as a result of that and ensure that your children have their bicycle helmets, if they're under the age of 18 they need to wear it," adds Wijnands. "It's the law; and also as parents even if you as a parent are over 18 you should be setting that example for your young ones."

Police are also stressing the importance of wearing bright coloured clothing while riding a bike, along with having a white light on the front of your bicycle and a red light on the back in order to visible in diminishing light at dusk or dark.
