Grey County Council Considers Increasing Development Charges

Grey County council is considering increasing residential development charges.

A consultant's report to council suggests a 53 per cent increase as of the new year, from about $4,400 per unit to $6,700 per unit.

Developers wonder if such a large increase is fair and necessary.

Stuart Doyle of Barry's Construction wants council to defer the decision for more study.

"Just some time for pause and reflection on what we're considering. I'd be happy to meet with them and they have a great staff and they're very professional, just to talk with them and see if we can come up with a little bit more equitable solution than I think is being presented," says Doyle.

Doyle wonders how the consultant has calculated the charges and says in some cases they're not directly related to development.   He calls the charges partly a subsidy and not cost sharing.

Grey Warden Al Barfoot says they have to have the new bylaw in place by the new year. He expects the development charges steering committee will meet again soon to consider the concerns.

But he says the bylaw will be presented to council for a vote on October 3rd.
