Bruce Power Refurbishment To Create Thousands of Jobs

Thousands of new jobs will be created in midwestern Ontario because of the planned refurbishment at Bruce Power.

Company officials met with community leaders in Walkerton Wednesday evening to outline the impact of the estimated $15-billion investment over the next 50 years.

Bruce Power Vice President of Supply Chain Harry Hall says they'll fill the positions locally as much as possible.

"Obviously we need the support of our local community. They play a huge role in our ability to operate and we want to make sure that our local communities are involved," says Hall.

The meeting was organized by the provincially-funded Four County Labour Market Planning Board.

Executive Director Gemma Mendez-Smith says their role is to ensure high schools and colleges are preparing young people, as well as those looking for a career change, with the proper skills.

Hall adds while most of the new jobs will require highly skilled tradespeople, there will be plenty of opportunities for workers in support positions.
