Owen Sound Fire Department Urges Residents To Check Smoke Alarms

Owen Sound's Fire Department is challenging residents to take a selfie as they check the expiry date on their smoke alarms.

This is Fire Prevention Week, and the theme is "Don't wait, check the date of your smoke alarms."

Fire Chief Doug Barfoot says smoke alarms don't last forever and now is the time to ensure yours is still working properly.

Smoke alarms usually need to be replaced every 10 years with the date of manufacture indicated on the back. You should check manufacturers instructions to confirm the expiry date for your alarm.

The alarms are required on every story, and outside all sleeping areas.

You should test them monthly by pushing the test button.

Batteries need to be replaced once a year, or when the low battery signal chirps.
