The first round of budget talks in Saugeen Shores is in the books.
Councillors had their first look at the draft 2017 budget, which includes a proposed 4% increase to the tax levy, if adopted without any further changes.
Treasurer Sue Dent says it would mean a $117 increase on the average tax bill with county and education levies factored in.
Mayor Mike Smith cautions councillors are not done with the budget and still have capital expenses to discuss, though he says it's a balancing act between requests from residents for increased services and keeping taxes in line.
Smith says starting out deliberations with a realistic tax increase on the table helps make budget talks more productive.
"In the past, we've started out with huge [proposed] increases when there's a big wish list, and I think you waste a lot of your time spinning your wheels with those things," says Smith. "You stay focused on what's important, what you've heard in the community."
Saugeen Shores councillors resume budget talks on December 6 with the draft capital budget.
