Snowmobile trails will close temporarily north of Owen Sound thanks to some mild temperatures and rain.
District 9 manager Karen Buratynski says more closures may follow if mild weather in the forecast comes to fruition.
The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs says the early season riding was a bonus. However, sledders need to respect the decision of clubs to close the trails for safety, and to protect private farmland and the snow base.
Riders are encouraged to remember that almost 2500km of the groomed trail in District 9 crosses private property. Riding on this property without a proper trail base could cause significant damage to the land and pre-planted crops. If this occurs, it may result in land use privileges being revoked by these generous people that donate the use of their private property every year, and affect the interconnectivity of the local trail system.
Finally, riding on closed OFSC prescribed trails is illegal. Anyone found doing so may be charged with trespassing regardless of whether the rider has purchased a snowmobile permit.
Trail conditions for OFSC District 9 will be updated as they happen throughout the entire holiday season at www.ofsc.on.ca, and all riders are encouraged to check with this resource before heading out.
