Huron East Will No Longer Have Elected Deputy Mayor

Huron East council has passed a bylaw that would see council, rather than voters, choose a deputy mayor.

Huron East currently elects two councillors from each of its five wards, as well as a mayor and deputy mayor.

The bylaw would see the election of ten councillors and the mayor, and then the elected councillors would choose a deputy mayor from among themselves to sit at county council.

Mayor Bernie MacLellan says there was a good discussion at the council meeting.  An argument was made to reduce the number of councillors by one so that it would create an odd number of councillors and thus reduce the chances of a tied vote.

“The new rule will be that the deputy mayor will not be voted At Large and that council themselves will decide out of whoever gets elected as council members who gets to represents as deputy mayor both in Huron East and at county council," says MacLellan.
