The federal government is honouring its commitment to pay for repairs to the Meaford Harbour breakwall.
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller confirmed Tuesday that he received a letter from Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Dominic LeBlanc, stating that the required repairs will be funded through the 2018 federal budget.
The breakwall was damaged in a storm last fall, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans had told Meaford that the cost to repair the work would be shared. That cost is estimated at between $65,000 and $75,000.
According to LeBlanc's letter, regional staff are in the process of completing the plans and specifications for repairs. The work is expected to start in the fall and be completed by March 2019.
Meaford Mayor Barb Clumpus thanked Larry Miller for the work he has done lobbying the federal government to get the repairs made.
"We are very excited about this. It is certainly something we are very concerned about," said Clumpus. "I am just so happy and grateful to Larry Miller for the work he did in bringing this to a successful resolution."
Clumpus said the breach in the breakwall is not having any immediate impact on operations in the harbour, but the repair work needs to be done.
