Central Huron voters hear from deputy mayor candidates

There's a two-way race for the position of deputy mayor in Central Huron in next month's municipal election.

Incumbent Dave Jewitt is being challenged by Jared Petteplace.

At Thursday night's all-candidates meeting at the Clinton Legion, Petteplace noted the municipality has several strengths.

"We have an amazing amount of schools -- post-secondary, secondary and elementary," he said. "We also have a ton of parks and of course the lakeshore, also Highway 4, Highway 8 and Highway 21 all go right through our municipality, which brings in a tremendous amount of traffic every single day."

Petteplace said he feels there has to be a way to take advantage of that traffic.

Dave Jewitt pointed to the number of schools in the municipality, including the students who attend the REACH Centre and live in the Clinton area during the school year.

He maintained the strength of the community is the people that live there, but he says that has to be promoted more.

"I think it's taking our local businesses and talking to the people that they have coming into their stores, asking them if they're comfortable being put up on social media, asking them what brought them to the municipality and what was the experience they had, because I'm sure it's going to be a positive experience that they had, so it's really our people that are our strength," said Jewitt.

Close to 90 people attended last night's all-candidates meeting in Clinton.
