Premier Doug Ford is acknowledging a very difficult day for GM and its suppliers, after learning of the closure of the Oshawa Assembly Plant.
Ford said along with shock and sadness, come feelings of anger and betrayal.
He said the government will stand with the people of Durham Region and is exploring measures to help the 2,500 impacted workers, along with businesses and communities, cope with the aftermath of this decision.
He said Employment Ontario will deploy its Rapid Re-Employment and Training Services program to provide impacted local workers with targeted local training and jobs services to help them regain employment as quickly as possible
The premier said he is also calling on the federal government to immediately extend Employment Insurance (EI) eligibility to ensure impacted workers in the auto sector can fully access EI benefits, such as was done in Alberta.
The PC government is also asking the federal government to work with their U.S. counterparts to remove all tariffs so that impacted auto parts suppliers can remain competitive after the Oshawa Assembly Plant closes its doors."
