United Way hope to tackle homelessness with funds from annual campaign

United Way Perth-Huron will kick off this year's campaign in Goderich on Saturday, September 14.

Executive Director Ryan Erb said their target this year is $1.633 million for Huron and Perth, an increase of about 11 per cent over last year.

“It's a big goal, an ambitious goal and part of that is so that we can increase our support for the issue of homelessness in Goderich and area,” said Erb.

He said the problem isn't as visible as it is in urban centres because a lot of people couch surf with friends. But he added it's becoming more visible as more people find themselves without a permanent home.

“Each year when we do our consideration of what the campaign goal should be, it's based on what the needs are in the community. So we look at the programs and the things that the United Way has to support or start in our communities and that's how we decide how much money we're trying to raise,” said Erb.

The United Way Perth-Huron will be at the Farmers Market on the Square in Goderich on Saturday, September 14, with the official campaign announcement taking place around 11 a.m.
